対象やイベントのある側面を数値に割り当てる規則を尺度 (scale)という．
対象のどのような性質が，数値のどのような性質に割り当てられるかによって分類した尺度の種類を尺度水準 (level of measurement)．
この考えは S.S.Stevens によって提唱され，当初は名義尺度，順序尺度，間隔尺度，および比率尺度の4水準に分類されていた．その後，絶対尺度や対数間隔尺度など様々な水準が拡張されている．
